Google’s Deep Dream Does Instagram

Social networks are abuzz with Deep Dream, Google Research’s trippy new inceptionism AI that sequentially enhances what it thinks are key features of images. You can tweak a number of parameters, producing pictures that range from fantastical to nightmarish.

I gave it a try using some of my Instagram pics (@amyleerobinson). But why stop there? With the help of Dreamscope, I gave both my friends and Instagram’s top celebrities the honor of a #deepdream treatment ;) Enjoy the weirdness.

What if Google ads were replaced with inspirational words? It’s happening to me.

Holstee Manifesto, inspireWhat if when you visited an ad-supported website, you were shown the Holstee Manifesto?

Back in December I saw an ad for Holstee. For the first time ever, I clicked (and ended up buying inspiring notecards printed on 50% elephant poo). Since that fine day, Holstee has been stalking me.

And I love it.

I read about monkeys plaguing Puerto Rico and Holstee is there. I browse Colossal; Holstee is there. NYT, WSJ, YouTube..Holstee is there.  There’s really nothing like clicking on a link and getting a thumbnail of “share your passion” or even better — while wasting time on Reddit, “life is short” pops up and jolts my supernova self back into focus.

I occasionally click the ads and buy more things from Holstee, as much in joy to share their kind words with friends as to keep these awesome ads in my browser.

Have you ever experienced something like this? Have you ever tried hacking Google Ads?

In case you need visual proof, here are a couple screenshots:

Usernames like Lightning

I’m thinking how nice it will be when all my usernames are synchronized across all the sites I log into. Google+ connect! Creative output like lightning.

Spark Google+

Google+ is fresh.  I like the ability to curate degrees of filter bubbles. For example, I put everyone in the friend circle and some people in “TED” and “intelligence”.

Hangout.

I am stoked about soon inviting the intelligence circle to a spontaneous gathering.  Think – we could all watch the same TEDtalk in different locations – yet still together – then virtually hang out and discuss.  It’s like Skype, created by Google.

Spark.

Default interests (racecars, recipes, fashion) are easily overcome by searching for anything.  Here are the first couple terms I chose and notable results from the first page of results:

1.  “ideas”  ideas cause ideas

2.  “complex biology” biology of the creative mind

3.  “infographic”  how does a hybrid car actually work?

I am impressed.

This is an expansion of the social network which already exists in your inbox.  It’s intuitive, which makes me curious to explore its functionality.   I’m excited to play with circles of friends and keep in touch at a distance in a more human way.

Go Google!
